Abstract

Electric Insulators are used in electrical nets under traction loads. An electric company in Brazil had a failure case on a piece of this type. That insulator was broken in two during the assembly process. With the local and the specimen data it has been done an analysis using procedures required in Standard CEI IEC 1109 applied to high voltage insulators. It has been done the visual inspection, dimensional inspection, macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the fracture surface. Regarding the results, it was possible to conclude the failure mechanism, the nucleation point, the crack propagation direction and the applied load characteristics.
