Abstract
In 2001 Midrex Technologies Inc. and Kobe Steel Ltd. entered into a strategic alliance with Techint SpA for the marketing and supply of FASTMET®, which is a coal based direct reduction technology, and FASTMELT®, which melts and further reduces FASTMET® DRI to produce high quality hot metal. This alliance gave also birth to the FASTEEL™ Process, which combines FASTMELT® with Techint’s CONSTEEL® system for continuous scrap preheating and feeding. Fastmet®, Fastmelt® and Fasteel™ represent now the most effective answer for both integrated and electrical steelmakers to definitively solve some of the key environmental and economical issues they are currently facing. The Fastmet® process permits recycling, within the steel plant, all solid wastes and recovering valuable iron and zinc units. Waste oil can be burned as fuel, thus improving the economics of the process and its environmental compliance. Fastmelt® and Fasteel™ further address the environmental concerns by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas generation with respect to the traditional BF-BOF route. Process flexibility, both in terms of raw materials selection and production capacity, energy efficiency, very low operational costs and reduced investment expenses, make the economics of these technologies very attractive and allow for a few years payback period.
