Abstract

Blast furnace operation at Corus Strip Products IJmuiden can be characterised by the combination of high productivity and low coke rate/high pulverised coal injection. The paper addresses the important role of the overall ferrous burden quality on blast furnace performance. The use of blast furnace simulation tests for monitoring of long term trends and related short term control strategies in the agglomeration plant are discussed. Last but not least the paper will stress the importance of paying close attention to screening efficiency in the stock house to avoid charging of excessive fines to the furnace, by controlling level and distribution of stock materials and moisture input. The overall message is that at higher levels of performance, in terms of productivity and low coke rate, ironmaking starts to closely resemble top sport: every detail becomes important.
