FINMET—A Low Cost Solution for High Value Products

Abstract

The FINMET Process is a fluidized bed reduction process that uses iron ore fines as a feedstock and gas as reducing agent. It has substantial advantages in terms of production cost and product quality due to its use of iron ore fines compared to other processes. A further concentration on the scrap market and investments of Mini Mill operators into reduction technology lead to new strategies. Economic comparisons show that FINMET HBI has even advantages in regions with higher natural gas prices. The development of the FINMET Process has been rapid and has culminated in projects for two large plants in Australia and Venezuela mainly because of the following outstanding benefits which can be derived from the FINMET Process: • lowest production costs • use of inexpensive, super available raw material without further treatment • product with high metal content and low residue content, ideally suitable for the production of special steels • product available in the form of HBI, with high density, basically inert, easy to handle by means of conventional transport equipment for bulk material • applicability in various steelmaking processes • compliance with environmental regulations • high flexibility in operation • highly advanced technology
