Abstract

Fracture mechanics is becoming a valuable tool in the evaluation of integrity of equipment and plant operating at high temperature. This may require consideration of time-dependent fracture processes such as creep crack growth and crack growth under combined creep and fatigue conditions. Alternatively, for hydrogen reaction vessels, for example, time dependent crack growth because of the presence of hydrogen and its diffusion to the crack tip may need to be considered. In this paper the background relations for dependent fracture mechanics in high temperature equipment under internal pressure are reviewed and several practical cases are discussed: these include crack growth and remaining life estimation in petrochemical plant and in steam generator components.
