Abstract

The apparent fracture toughness of gamma-irradiated polycarbonate plates was determined by bending test using SENB specimens. The results were analyzed as function of gamma rays dose and loading rate. The fracture mechanisms were determined by optical microscopy from direct examination of fracture surfaces of the specimens. An increase in the radiation dose decreases the apparent fracture toughness and increases the possibility of occurrence of a brittle fracture. Therefore, polycarbonate presents a ductile-to-brittle transition as the radiation dose and/or the loading rate increases. Fracture toughness of a polycarbonate plate was measured as a function of gamma radiation dose using a SENB specimen. The test results showed that the material presents a ductile-to-brittle transition as the radiation dose increases.
