Abstract
The role of grain boundary sliding (GBD) in a Al5%Ca5%Zn alloy during superplastic deformation is studied. The deformation takes place when intensive deformation bands are formed. The formation of these bands is due to grain boundary sliding. Intensive deformation bands are visible between surface areas where the deformation is practically zero. The characteristics of the bands, width and spacing between them, depend on the strain levels. The relative displacements and rotations of large grain conglomerates cause the increase of the number of grains along the extension direction and its decrease in the transverse direction.
