Abstract

The blast furnace hearth is the controlling portion of a furnace with regard to campaign life. Monitoring of the hearth refractories using thermocouples and analytical techniques can enable the blast furnace operator and engineer to optimize the operation of the furnace through adjustments to burdening, production rate and tapping to ensure safe operation to the end of the campaign. Information gathered in hearth monitoring can be used to design effective repairs so as to equalize the hearth life with other critical portions of the blast furnace. The fundamental objective is to determine the remaining safe useful life of the furnace. Monitoring allows prediction of furnace condition and optimization of operational planning regarding repairs and relines. The use of thermocouples, data analysis, and correlation with operating parameters enables accurate evaluation of refractory wear, thermal behavior, and effectiveness of corrective measures, ensuring safer and more economical furnace campaigns.
