Abstract
A new cooling concept has been developed which combines cast copper cooling elements such as copper staves with cast-in monel pipes. The monel pipes form the cooling water passages, as a result a smooth and leak-proof flow path for the cooling water is realised in combination to sufficient dimensional flexibility to meet existing shell opening patterns. As an additional advantage, any welds inside the furnace shell vessel - potential leak sources - are eliminated. The main application is for copper stave coolers in high performance blast furnaces, but many other applications are possible e.g. in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) for ferro-alloy & non-ferrous industries, but also in the new generation direct smelting processes such as Cyclone Converter Furnace (CCF).
