Abstract
Laser profile measurement systems have been used at the Corus Group plants for a number of years. Initially the usage was confined to converter lining measurements. Severe problems with ladle refractory wear were encountered and refractory scanning was thus extended to ladles. The Laserscanners which are used in most applications are based on the technology of a Laser-Distance measurement unit and a bidirectional rotary control mechanism for automatic scanning. With this type of scanning unit the fastest average measuring time for a complete Steelcasting ladle is between 10–20 minutes. Positive experiences of this earlier Lasermeasurement systems made by Ferrotron which are used in other Corus plants have encouraged the Aldwarke Plant Managers to install a fully automatic measuring system for their steelcasting ladles. At Aldwarke Works one decided to go for a revolutionary new Laser-Scanner technology “The LaCam” which shorts the measuring time down to 20–30 seconds with more than 200,000 measuring points. Beside the speed the simplicity of operating and the versatility of measuring results are the benefits of the fully automatic Ladle Scanning Station.
