Abstract
In this paper the design and application of hot blast stoves developed and built by Danieli Corus is being discussed. A multitude of aspects is covered, such as the design, the sizing of the stove related to the required production of the blast furnace, the efficiency in stove design, the selection of refractory materials, silica versus alumina, and the checker support system, general construction features, the reusing or rebuilding of the shell, considerations in avoiding stress corrosion problems in the shell, the use of a mechanical or ceramic burner, the possibility of pre-heating the gas and/or combustion air, three or four stoves operation, references of existing plants in operation and the latest developments of Danieli Corus building hot blast stove systems in the world. Hot blast stoves producing high temperature blast were developed in order to reduce the coke rate. In the nineteen-eighties, simplified designs of the stoves have been designed because of demands for reduced blast temperature and to reduce investment costs. Although over-capacity exists in the world Danieli Corus foresees that there will be built and rebuilt blast furnaces that require hot blast stoves somewhere in the world as iron steel will be continued to be produced, however the location may shift to low cost countries.
