Abstract

The search for production technologies with less consumption of carbon-based fuels is no longer just a need linked to the cost of production but has become a premise for sustainable production through the reduction or even total elimination of CO2 emissions. This paper will show the main initiatives adopted by ArcelorMIttal Tubarão Hot Strip Mill in the way to achieve reduction on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the Slabs Reheating Furnaces. It involved a teamwork including Process Control, IT, Production Planning, Maintenance and Operation to identify and actuate on each opportunity to increase charging temperature and decrease discharging temperature. As a result, ArcelorMittal Tubarão Hot Strip Mill has significantly increased its Hot Charging (HCR) and Warm Charging (WCR) rates and lately became able to operate also with Direct Hot Charging for part of the mix. As a result, higher productivity has been achieved combined with lower gas consumption, which results in lower production costs and ultimately, production on the path of greater sustainability with energy savings and lower CO2 emissions.
