Abstract
In general, iron ores present porosity in varying quantities depending on a series of factors related to the ore body’s genesis. In some cases porosity may reach 50% or more. Porosity is a determining factor of particle density, and, in turn, the density of particles is commonly used in the majority of metallurgical calculations, from mass balance to the most complex population balance calculations. Therefore, porosity is an important characteristic and must be known in all processing steps. However, porosity has been very much neglected, mainly due to difficulties related to its determination. In this work, porosity related phenomena is discussed as well as the methodologies for its measurement. Some practical results are presented, which show the importance of porosity characterization.
