Abstract

The increasing demand for high quality flat rolled steel, mainly for the automotive or household market has led to a need for steels with extremely low levels of elements such as carbon, hydrogen or nitrogen. Secondary metallurgy processes, such as RH degasser, have to match the cycle times of melting and casting facilities in the LD shop while at the same time achieving more stringent metallurgical and chemical specifications. Since the ratio of vacuum treated steel does increase, not only logistical problems occur, but also existing vacuum plants have to be modernized or further vacuum plants have to be built in order to match the production requirements. In this paper plant features of the existing production facilities at VOEST ALPINE Stahl, Linz as well as vacuum plant features of the new RH plant installed at COSIPA are illustrated.
