Abstract
Electromagnetic stirring improve quality and productivity and reduce costs in continuous casting and ladle refining of steel. For continuous casting ABB supplies the full range of electromagnetic stirrers, EMS, for billets, blooms and slabs. The ElectroMagnetic BRake, EMBR, and Flow Control Mold, FC Mold, reduces corner cracks, longitudinal cracks, breakouts, quarter-band inclusions, mould powder entrapments and surface defects in slab casting. Mould EMS, MEMS, reduces surface and subsurface defects, lowers the breakout ratio and gives a better inner quality. Strand EMS, SEMS, reduces segregation, porosity and cracks - in the central part of the strand. Final EMS, FEMS, in combination with MEMS or SEMS further reduces centre segregation and porosity. Electromagnetic stirring in ladle furnaces gives improved chemical and thermal homogenisation, increased productivity and a superior steel cleanliness. Electromagnetic stirring gives substantial cost savings compared to gas stirring, with the investment often recovered in one to two years.
