Abstract

The Flow Control Mold (FC-Mold) was developed as a result of cooperative research between KAWASAKI STEEL and ABB to improve the quality and productivity through a better control of steel flow in the mold. This new system has two pair of poles which generate two electro-magnetic fields covering the entire width of the strand, one at the meniscus and the other at the lower part of the mold. The upper pole stabilizes the meniscus and thus prevents mold powder entrapment in the solidifying shell. The lower pole suppresses the deep penetration of the molten steel into the strand and promotes the upward flow of inclusions and argon gas bubbles to the meniscus. This new system has already been introduced at the No.4 caster in Mizushima Works and the No.3 caster in Chiba Works of KAWASAKI STEEL, both of which are greatly contributing to high productivity and high product quality.
