Abstract

Since 1994 Siderar has been involved in a process towards increase productivity of the steel shop. One of the aims was to increase transportation capacity of the steel ladle passing from 180 T, original design capacity, to 200 T. A considerable higher amount of cast per day was achieved, Steel Shop passed from 35 cast/day in 1994 to 45 cast/day in 2007. Higher frequency of cast/day and a higher tonnage per cast led to a worst condition of the ladle metallic shell and mechanical parts as Arms, shell bottom, slag detection system assembly and slide gate. This work shows all the actions taken in order to improve maintainability, reliability and performance of the slag detector system at the ladle, consisting basically in introducing design modifications in this device so affected by the exigent new work conditions of the steel shop. (New design internal nozzle). As a result of the implementation of such a plan, higher life time, less operation and maintenance cost, and more availability and reliability of the ladle has been obtained.
