Improving the Quality of Flat Rolled Products using the EMBR

Abstract

The ElectroMagnetic BRake (EMBR) has been developed and installed in both conventional slab casters and thin slab casters. The magnetic field covers normally the entire width of the strand, making the casting operation less sensitive to the variations in casting parameters. The results obtained with the EMBR have shown that: the steel flow velocity at meniscus is lowered and controlled; the turbulence and the meniscus variations are substantially dampened; the height of the standing waves near the narrow sides is heavily reduced; the steel penetration depth down into the slab is reduced; the meniscus steel temperature is increased. This results in an improved surface, subsurface as well as inner quality of the slab, giving a lower rejection ratio. Further, there is a potential for increased casting speed, i.e. improved productivity and production economy. In order to optimize the installations and the use of EMBR, ABB uses advanced three dimensional computer models to simulate steel flow and magnetic fields.
