Influence of Low Temperature Ion Nitriding on Structure and Properties of Duplex Stainless Steels

Abstract

A duplex stainless steel (DIN X2CrNiMoN 22 5), an austenitic stainless steel (DIN X2CrNiMo 18 10), and a ferritic stainless steel (DIN X1CrNiMoN 28 4 2), the latter two with a chemical composition similar to the duplex steel's austenite and ferrite phases, were investigated. Ion nitriding experiments were performed at 100 keV and implantation doses of 4 × 10¹⁷ and 1 × 10¹⁸ N ions/cm² at ~100 °C. The morphology and structure of the implanted layers were characterized by X-ray diffraction and TEM. The presence of nitrides was detected at both ion implantation doses. Subsequent corrosion polarization curves (in 30,000 ppm Cl⁻, pH 4, at room temperature) and friction coefficient tests were performed to compare the properties of the treated specimens with those of untreated samples of the same alloys. The different behaviors could be explained by the distinct physical properties and crystal structures of ferrite (bcc) and austenite (fcc).
