Abstract
Ceramic/metal composites (Al₂O₃/ZrO₂/Nb) were obtained from reaction sintering with the diluent of Al₂O₃ in an argon atmosphere respectively at 1500°C, 1650°C and 1800°C. Then the mechanical character parameters such as flexural strength, fracture toughness, Vickers diamond hardness and sintering density were measured. The SEM micrographs display that the higher the sintering temperature is, the larger the size of metal inclusions. The measured results show that large inclusions with irregular bifurcations made more contribution to toughening, and that the composite containing fine inclusions exhibits a little lower toughness but much better strength than the one containing large inclusions. The hardness is indirectly related to inclusions but directly to the sintering density. The paper indicates that the composite containing lager inclusions or with high sintering density uncertainly has good overall mechanical properties. However present work believes the emergence of fine metal inclusions with irregular bifurcations in the composites produced by reaction sintering to be of advantage for the improvement of the mechanical performance.
