Abstract

The coal & coke Laboratory at Usiminas Technology Centre is responsible for coal thermoplastic testing included in R&D projects developed at Usiminas. It is important to have a procedure for storing small coal samples which allows the limitation of the influence of coal oxidation on the results mainly of thermal rheological tests. Seeking the development of a more appropriate storage procedure of small coal samples, two U.S. coals of different ranks and high maximum Gieseler fluidity were stored in four different ways and tested by Gieseler plastometer and Audibert-Arnu dilatometer. The results showed that the storage conditions evaluated have little influence on the loss of plastic properties of samples, since no condition has been able to avoid the significant reduction of fluidity that occurs between the first and second month of storage. Therefore, it is recommended that the samples of coking coals received at the laboratory be characterized as soon as possible, preferably less than 7 days for the thermoplastic testing.
