Abstract
The present work evaluated the influence of cold rolling on the relationship between actual stress, macrostructural refinement and tensile strength limit (TRT) in Al-2%Si alloys with and without the addition of 0,1% of carbon nanotubes (NTCs). The alloys were produced by conventional casting, solidified in a metal mold and subjected to cold rolling until a significant reduction in diameter to 3 mm. The alloy underwent macrostructural analysis and tensile testing The results showed that the addition of NTCs promoted grain refinement, with a reduction of approximately 35% in the characteristic dimension of the grains and transition from columnar to equiaxial structure. After rolling, the alloy with NTCs maintained greater structural homogeneity. The tensile tests revealed that the alloy with NTCs presented higher real stress (≈250 MPa) and higher LRT (≈235 MPa) compared to the alloy without reinforcement (≈225 MPa), but with lower ductility. It is concluded that the CNTs act as obstacles to the movement of discordances and sites of heterogeneous nucleation, promoting refinement and increase of mechanical resistance, although with a reduction in the capacity of plastic deformation.
