Abstract
Silicon carbide (SiC) is widely used in structural and ballistic applications due to its high hardness, high modulus of elasticity, and low density. However, its high covalency hinders densification by solid-state sintering, making the use of additives necessary to enable liquid-phase sintering. In this work, the biaxial bending strength of a commercial SiC from the manufacturer Kymera, additivated with Al₂O₃ and Y₂O₃ and sintered at 1950°C, was evaluated. The samples were formed by uniaxial pressing, subjected to removal of organic binders, and subsequently sintered under an argon atmosphere. The biaxial bending test was performed according to the ABNT NBR 6872:2023 standard. The material exhibited a biaxial flexural strength of 344.6 MPa, a value situated in the intermediate range when compared to literature data for liquid-phase sintered SiC ceramics with Al₂O₃–Y₂O₃ additives. Analysis of fractured specimens indicated abrupt fracture and behavior typical of brittle ceramic materials. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs revealed a microstructure characteristic of LPS-SiC, with a good degree of densification, faceted grains, and relatively homogeneous growth, although still with the presence of residual pores and a remaining vitreous intergranular phase, which directly influenced the mechanical performance of the material. The results demonstrate that the processing adopted was efficient and indicate the material's potential for structural applications, including ballistic protection systems, with the possibility of further optimization through microstructural control.
