Abstract

Additive manufacturing, especially through Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), has revolutionized polymer fabrication by enabling rapid prototyping and the creation of complex geometries. However, the layer-by-layer deposition nature introduces strong structural anisotropy in the material, impacting its mechanical and physical performance. This article investigates in detail the influence of 3D printing angulations (0° and 90°) on the properties of polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) specimens. The study conducts an evaluation of mechanical strength through tensile testing (ASTM D638 standard), quantifies the water absorption rate (ASTM D570 standard), and evaluates the polymer's morphology via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrate that the vertical orientation (90°) maximized the ultimate strength, withstanding stresses up to 50.77 MPa. In contrast, the horizontal configuration (0°) did not align parallel to the tensile force, representing the worst-case loading scenario. Under this condition, the material significantly lost strength, suffering premature failure with a rupture stress around 21.24 MPa. Simultaneously, the physical test showed a progressive mass gain of 1.89% due to the hygroscopicity of the component. It is concluded that rigorous control of the slicing orientation is essential in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) guidelines to ensure the stability and reliability of PETG parts in engineering applications.
