Abstract

This work investigates the tribological behavior and microstructural degradation of AISI H13 hot-work tool steel subjected to successive reciprocating sliding tests (50 N, 5 Hz, 540–600 °C) against an alumina counterface. The impact of dynamic thermal softening on the stability of the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear mechanisms was evaluated across three material conditions with distinct hardness evolution (A2, A3, and A4). All samples-initiated Test 1 at 51 HRC. After the first run, sample A3 retained the highest hardness (~48 HRC) due to the stability of its secondary carbides; this provided a rigid substrate that sustained a protective oxide layer (glaze layer), stabilizing the COF at 0.55 during Test 2. Conversely, samples A2 and A4 underwent critical softening (dropping to 44 and 42 HRC, respectively), leading to cyclical fracture of the tribo-oxidized films, severe stick-slip phenomena, and mechanically assisted subsurface delamination.
