Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of graphene oxide (GO) incorporation on the thermal properties of natural fiber Calotropis procera. The GO was synthesized using the modified Hummers method and incorporated into the fiber at different concentrations (0,1; 0,5 and 1,0 mg⋅mL-1). The samples were subjected to controlled drying and subsequently characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in order to evaluate thermal stability, degradation profile, and the endothermic and exothermic events associated with the thermal transformations of the fibers. The thermogravimetric results indicated changes in the thermal degradation profile of the modified fibers, with a shift in the degradation events from 282.5°C to 299.1°C and an increase in residual mass, especially for the sample containing the highest GO concentration. The DSC curves revealed modifications in the endothermic events associated with the degradation of the lignocellulosic constituents of the fiber, indicating the influence of the GO on the thermal stability of the system. Therefore, the incorporation of graphene oxide improved the thermal behavior of Calotropis procera fiber, demonstrating its potential application in materials that requires greater thermal resistance.
