Abstract

The effect of elements such as alkalis and / or chlorine on the reduction-disintegration process of the various iron materials loaded in the blast furnace has been investigated on a laboratory scale with a counter-current reduction furnace. The results of the tests have shown a catalytic effect of potassium on the iron oxides reduction for all the tested materials, while an inhibiting effect of the chlorine has been observed. The presence of alkalis leads to a large increase of the sinter disintegration, whilst alkali has negligible effects on the mechanical behavior of the lump ore and the pellets. The large increase of the sinter disintegration is due to the increase of the quantity of low temperature reduction. For the lump ore, there is no effect of the alkalis on the quantity of reduction at low temperatures and consequently the mechanical behavior remains almost the same. For the pellets, the small size of the hematite grains and the high porosity explain the good mechanical resistance in spite of increased quantities of low temperature reduction. Concerning the chlorine, a decrease of the low temperature disintegration of the sinter is measured, due to a diminution of the quantity of reduction at low temperatures.
