Abstract

The blast furnace process has been the main route for production of hot metal on the integrated steel industry. In last decades several new technologies have been introduced such as PCI and raw materials preparation. This paper aims to investigate a new operational technique based on enrichment of the oxygen blast. This technology is analyzed based on a total model capable of analyzing several aspects of the in-furnace status. The model is based on the simultaneous solution of transport equations of momentum, energy and chemical species for five coexisting phases within the furnace. Gradual enrichment of the blast is compared with a standard operation and simultaneous changing of burden distribution in order to keep the operation stable. Aiming to compare the operation techniques, hot metal temperature was kept constant throughout the simulations. In-furnace variables fields such as temperature, gas velocity among others are discussed. The simulation results have shown that the productivity is increased for increasing oxygen enrichment mainly due to the decreasing of blast volume which promotes stable gas flow through the cohesive zone promoting smooth burden flow. Also the efficiency of combustion of pulverized coal within the raceway was observed furnishing the necessary thermal supply for the entire blast furnace.
