Abstract
CVRD’s iron ore characteristics which have influence on their grinding process parameters were studied. The study was carried out in three parts: physical, chemical, mineralogical and microstructural characterization of iron ores and blends; standard batch tests to estimate grinding behavior according to a mixture design (simplex-lattice); correlation of investigated characteristics with batch tests results. It was observed that Rittinger’s Law can be applied to the different iron ore mixtures studied, and for extension, to the morphologies typically used in pelletizing plants in Vitória. It was proved the effectiveness of standard grindability index. Two models of grinding behavior were stated: one based on specific surface generation and other based on material disappearing rate of the 45 μm size. The morphologies were classified in ascendent order of grindability regarding specific surface: lobular hematite, lamellar hematite, granular hematite, martitic hematite to goethite, microcrystalline hematite. This information could be helpful in order to increase capacity and decrease production costs; improve analysis of daily anomalies, like variations on size distribution of the feed or variations on feed rate; mapping of mines’ sections concerning grindability, in order to elaborate a masterplan; improving the previsions of each pile’s behavior.
