Abstract

From detailed inclusion and life tests on industrial melts the effect of inclusion volume and type on fatigue characteristics was studied. Modification of Al₂O₃–MnS inclusions with Ca or rare earth containing reagents reduces life. The conditions for favourable life properties are: low oxygen content (clean steel) and modification of the residual oxide inclusions to oxide-MnS complexes.
