Abstract
Ladle Furnace steel refinement has been a vital part of the steel making process for some years now. The requirement for a suitable ladle furnace is that it can adjust temperature and composition of the steel to meet exacting casting demands. Their use should enable maximization of steel production. This paper looks at structural modifications to ladle furnace roofs that will result in improved efficiency, environmental benefits and cost savings in this area of production. The form of and the materials used in the modifications are new to the steel industry. The paper is aimed at all personnel involved in steel making processes using ladles, as well as production management. The paper will concentrate on the design study to achieve the required benefits, the structural modifications undertaken and the results seen with the first fully implemented production unit at CORUS Lackenby works in the United Kingdom. In conclusion the paper will discuss the overall production improvements and the resultant cost saving areas. Further development/refinement will be shown and the expected/achieved results from these will be provided.
