Abstract

The paper presents the application of the Scandinavian Lancers technology in ladle metallurgy, focusing on powder injection processes for secondary steel refining. The system enables controlled injection of powders into the molten steel bath to improve steel quality, particularly in the production of aluminum-killed and high-quality steels. The authors describe the configuration of a typical SL installation, including dispensing station, control panel, lance mast, and injection equipment. The technology allows sequential or combined injection of different powders, enabling operations such as desulfurization, recarburization, and trace element additions (e.g., boron). The development of injection metallurgy is discussed in the context of BOF shops, mini-mills, duplex processes, and arc furnace operations. Emphasis is placed on process flexibility, improved metallurgical control, and the growing global adoption of powder injection systems as an integrated part of secondary refining practices.
