Abstract
Considering the process requirements of the secondary metallurgy, an update is given on the application of purge plug elements in the ladle. The correct choice of the refractory material and the most appropriate design for the given ladle will determine the achievable plug life and the purge system efficiency. The use of directional porosity plugs is state of the art. By adapting the concept of long time stirring and improving the ladle life, steelplants can achieve a full ladle campaign with one or two purge plug sets. This is explained using an european BOF-plant as example. Also the use of 2-3 plugs in one ladle at the same time or the use of automatic coupling equipment are characteristic of the latest trends.
