Abstract

The utilization of BOF steel slag in high-quality applications is often limited due to insufficient volume stability, mainly caused by free lime content. Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG (TKS), in cooperation with Forschungsgemeinschaft Eisenhüttenschlacken e. V. (FEhS), developed a liquid slag treatment process that minimizes free lime by injecting oxygen and sand into the slag after converter tapping. This process improves slag quality without affecting steel quality or production time. Treated slags achieve a free lime content of ~1 wt.% and basicity <3, fulfilling requirements even for hydraulic engineering uses. The system includes advanced injection and dedusting equipment, is highly automated, and has treated over 200,000 tons of slag during development. The plant now treats ~10,000 tons/month, contributing to sustainability by producing stable, versatile engineering materials.
