Abstract

Iron ores originating from different resources are supposed to be of different grades depending on their chemical composition or other properties. Normally only premium quality raw materials are used for producing hot metal. It is considered to be a waste of money to transport low grade material around the globe. But it may make sense economically to use a local low grade resource. In this case it is necessary to have knowledge about the constraints using low grade ore. In this paper one specific property of a local iron ore in Austria, the high alkali content, will be described. Voestalpine Stahl Donawitz has experienced a good way of dealing with high alkali loads in sintering as well as in blast furnace operation.
