MANAGEMENT OF STEEL INDUSTRY BY-PRODUCTS

Abstract

To be part of the programme to improve the sustainability of industrial operations the steel industry must improve the management of by-products that are generated in the steelmaking process. The industry has made significant progress in reducing the impact of steelmaking activities on the environment but there is still potential to reduce the volume of by-product materials that are disposed of in deposits. The first stage in any programme for reducing the volume of material to be deposited must be a full characterisation study of the by-products. The feasibility of developing a method of utilisation of the by-products can then be examined. Any processing system must take full account of the problems that can arise in the handling and processing of these by-products. The treatment of by-products is often considered to be outside the core business of steelmakers. Multiserv can deliver these types of operations on a contract service basis. In this paper the critical factors to be considered are outlined and a number of practical case studies are presented to illustrate how various approaches can be adopted to meet the different conditions encountered at steelmaking sites around the world.
