Abstract

The electric arc furnace was developed for the economical recycling of scrap in order to produce structural steel. In the 60s the increased demand for such qualities led to the development of Ultra High Power Electric Arc Furnaces introducing foamy slag and long arc practice, water-cooled wall panels and water-cooled roof, burners as well as slag-free tapping. Increasing the productivity resulted in reduced tap-to-tap times as well as reduced energy consumption. The KORFARC-technology uses submerged tuyeres installed in Electric Arc Furnaces in order to substitute electrical energy and to improve melting by injection of oxygen as well as the use of post combustion. The process of CONARC - a combination of converter and Electric Arc Furnace process in the same shell - considering different raw material input as well as the use of different energy sources. Today 3 CONARC - plants with a total capacity of up to 6,000,000 t per year of steel are under construction respectively erection. CONTIARC - an Electric Arc Furnace which operates continuously under electric power - Mannesmann Demag’s view to the future.
