Abstract
The off-gas system of Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF) operates under extreme thermal conditions. Atmospheric air infiltration promotes the turbulent secondary combustion of carbon monoxide, generating asymmetric flame fronts that impose premature thermomechanical fatigue on the water-tube panels. This work presents a computational thermofluid dynamic model developed to map the heat flux within the equipment and support maintenance engineering. The simulation was solved in steady-state (STAR-CCM+), using the k-ω SST model for turbulence, Eddy Break-Up (EBU) for reaction kinetics, and Discrete Ordinates (DO) coupled with the WSGG model for thermal radiation. Structural complexity was simplified through a smooth shell, thermally equalized by an effective convective heat transfer coefficient (heff). Assuming a conservative scenario of maximum energy release, the radiative solver reproduced the intense heat removal to the walls, stabilizing the average outlet temperature at 806 °C. The model demonstrated good agreement with operational data, achieving over 97% accuracy in predicting molar fractions compared to field measurements. The thermal load mapping (Boundary Heat Flux) identified potential short-term overheating zones on the lower duct walls. The methodology indicates a path for the tactical targeting of inspections and enables future predictions of structural failure due to thermal cycling.
