Abstract

GO (grain-oriented) and NGO (non-grain-oriented) electrical steels use the VOD (Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization) process in their production flow. This vacuum treatment is based on pressure-dependent reactions, which include the reduction of hydrogen and nitrogen content and decarburization associated with deoxidation. In the case of GO, the VOD process is essential for adjusting nitrogen and hydrogen contents, ensuring that the steel meets quality specifications. For NGO, in addition to hydrogen control, the carbon content is also adjusted through oxygen blowing during the VOD process. The formation of gases under vacuum expands the volume of the metal, making the freeboard essential for accommodating the bath and preventing material splatter. The freeboard—that is, the vertical distance between the surface of the liquid bath (slag) and the upper ladle rim—plays a crucial role. It is important both for controlling foaming, which prevents material from splattering out of the ladle, and for positioning the blowing lances. This freeboard must meet established standards before the steel proceeds to the next stages of the process. Therefore, it is measured after the steel is tapped from the Converter. This measurement is performed manually by the operator using a rebar, a method with low accuracy and high variability that exposes the operator to risks. The objective of this work is to develop a new measurement method that allows this task to be performed safely, accurately, and automatically.
