Abstract
A relevant fraction (up to 30%) of the metallurgical residues is formed by carbon and iron fines (Particle Size Distribution, PSD 90% <1.0 mm) and its recycling has been the purpose of many researches and of new process developments. Most of these new technologies that can recover the metallic and energy values of these residues need a greater particle size distribution (PSD 90% >10.0 mm) for its feed and/or need a mix with the iron oxides and the fuel. This kind of composed agglomerate is obtained through hardening without firing, i.e. the cold bonded pelleting and the briquetting. However, the evaluation of these agglomerates presents difficulties due to the lack of compatible standards concerning their characteristics. This work evaluates the methods used by other authors and proposes a new simple technique for evaluating the mechanical strength of these composed agglomerates. The method presents a significant correlation value (R² = 0.98) and shows capacity to compare, to repeat and to reproduce other different results accurately. That precision allows a fine optimization of these agglomeration processes and consequently saves binders, energy and further raw materials.
