Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of quenching and tempering heat treatments on the mechanical behavior of two microalloyed steels containing different contents of niobium and molybdenum. The steels were produced in an induction furnace and, after casting, were forged into bars with a square cross-section of 40 mm side and 1500 mm length. Cubic samples of 15 mm side from these bars were heated at 910 and 1050°C and subsequently tempered within the temperature range of 300 to 600°C, with water cooling. After the heat treatments, the samples were subjected to conventional metallographic preparation procedures. A 2% Nital reagent was used to reveal the microstructures. Vickers microhardness measurements were performed to compare the effect of molybdenum and niobium under the different heating and cooling conditions. The results indicate that the steel with a higher molybdenum content exhibits a larger amount of ferrite and bainite, whereas polygonal ferrite predominates in the steel with a higher niobium content. The greater amount of acicular constituents causes an increase in hardness, which is observed mainly in the tempering range between 550 and 600°C.
