Abstract

Ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steels were used in an increasing number of applications during the last 10 years. In relation to their chemical composition they are placed between the ordinary austenitic stainless steels and the high alloyed ferritic grades. After a historical review of their development, this paper gives an overview of modern duplex steels. Beside a description of the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and wear resistance of wrought and cast duplex grades, there will be considered the influence of manufacturing and processing on the microstructure and subsequently on the materials properties. Especially the structural changes in microstructure during the formation of a large number of precipitates which can occur in a temperature range between 300 and 1250 °C play an important role and are discussed.
