Abstract

This work simulated the ladle change process in a four-strand casting tundish, evaluating the influence of geometric and operational parameters on fluid flow behavior. Flow differences between the inner and outer strands were observed, implying significant variations in both the metal residence time and the volume of mixing material generated during the exchange. Maintaining the steel level at an intermediate volume during the exchange process (holding time) did not indicate any process benefits. Flow changes under non-isothermal conditions resulted in a smaller discard volume for the outer strand, while increased the discard volume for inner strands. The intermix criteria had a huge impact on the volume discarded: for strict composition with 5% tolerance, this resulted in larger discarded volume. In order to decrease the intermix it is recommended to reopen the ladle shroud with the tundish minimum volume of 5 tons and the ladle throughput rate should be 2.5Q up to the working level. The presence of a turbulence inhibitor was positive for the process, reducing the dispersion of slag droplets from the slag layer and increasing the minimum residence time of the inner strands.
