Abstract
The pig iron production in Brazil is approximately 30 millions tons/year. Coke and charcoal blast furnaces are responsible for 75 and 25 % of this production, respectively. Process control of coke blast furnaces is similar all over the world. Charcoal blast furnaces require a special strategy for process control, due to the very specific characteristics of charcoal. Researchers in Brazilian universities have been involved in developing models to be used in blast furnace control. In the present paper, the following examples of this development are described, 1) physical model to simulate gas flow in blast furnaces operating with high rates of pulverized coal injection, 2) process control model for charcoal blast furnaces, 3) tridimensional mathematical model based on the multifluid approach. These examples show the interaction efforts of universities and industries in Brazil.
