Abstract

A model use to simulate the constrained thermal fatigue of an aluminum casting alloy is presented in this work. The strain to which each node is subjected to is computed from the thermal changes produced on the test piece as it is heated up or cooled down between a given temperature range. The agreement between the predicted and measured values of stress is good enough to consider that the model reflects the behaviour of the material. It is found that the predicted life of the specimen is higher than that experimentally observed, an effect which might be due to overaging of the material as the specimen is being tested.
