Modern Man-Machine Interfaces for Computer Assisted Operation

Abstract

In the 1970's, computer assisted Man-Machine Interfaces applying cathode ray tubes (CRT's) were introduced to the steel industry. The inherent weakness due to low powered computer systems led to reduced acceptance by the operators. Nevertheless, the industry has recognized the potential of such systems and has encouraged the designers of both the hardware and the system software to further improve the performance. This scenario was followed by a two part development strategy with less powerful Personal Computers (PC's) on the one hand and more powerful Mini Computers on the other hand. Rapid increases in computer performance at lower costs have promoted modern Man-Machine Interfaces applying Client/Server technology. These systems meet operator requirements such as ease of use, low training needs, and universality. They allow improved control of continuous casting processes, reduction of human error, and implementation of functions such as data archiving, diagnostics, statistical process control, historical trending, and reporting.
