Abstract

The Global Steel Industry uses an increasing variety of new monolithic products and technologies to minimize their costs, and to maximize both productivity and plant availability. Cast in place linings, customized precast shapes and shotcreting veneer repairs have all emerged in the last ten years as cost effective alternatives to traditional bricked ladle linings. The tundish has similarly embraced the use of monolithic refractories, with sprayed magnesia working linings, cast in place permanent safety linings, and precast flow control shapes providing the most cost effective, quality optimized route to high tonnage clean steel. This presentation provides an overview of current monolithic refractory technologies used in selected Steel Industry applications, and a glimpse into emerging technologies and materials.
