Abstract

This paper presents the technological evolution and solutions applied to modern rolling mills for stainless steel, developed by MDS Mannesmann Demag Sack GmbH. Starting from the traditional Sendzimir monoblock design, the development led to a 20-roll mill with a twin-housing design aimed at improving strip accessibility, thickness control, flatness, structural rigidity, automation, and operational reliability. Key topics include hydraulic positioning systems, crown and eccentric adjustments, direct roll force measurement, automated roll changes, increased productivity through optimized handling and sequence controls, and advanced automation levels. Mathematical models integrated into the mill management system ensure high and reproducible product quality with economic benefits in operation and maintenance.
