Abstract
In 1996/97 VAI modernized the existing skin-pass mill of VOEST-ALPINE STAHL LINZ in its 1.9 million t/a cold-rolling mill complex No. 2. VOEST-ALPINE STAHL LINZ is a supplier of the automotive and household industry which demands excelente flatness, strip surface and final material properties. VAI installed a new VAIONEER process control and automation system ensuring the fulfillment of current and future requirements in terms of flatness, strip surface cleanness and structure and final material properties. The coil preparation station was revamped and a strip centering device for proper coiling accuracy was implemented. New dry-skin-passing equipment was installed with the target of totally substituting wet skin passing for all strip qualities: Running the mill in dry-skin-passing mode saves purchasing and disposal costs for the wet-skin-passing agent. Additionally surface cleanness is improved. VAI developed a new solution for the dry-skin-passing equipment based on roll cleaning using rotating and oscillating wire brushes for the work rolls and oscillating cleaning stones for the back up rools. In the following details of diis project and operational results are presented.
