Abstract
This paper deals with the microstructural changes observed in magnets, during its fabrication. Alloys with different Sm contents were milled, aligned, compacted and examined after sintering and heat treatment. SmCo₅ and other microconstituents were analyzed by EDS and x-ray diffraction. Relations between microstructure, coercivity and remanence were established, based on the phases volume fraction. Microstructure was modelled based on the binary phase diagram and corrections for the average chemical analysis and oxygen contamination. The effect of heat-treatment on coercivity may be explained by compositional changes of the SmCo₅ phase.
